Artist Statement:
I primarily explore the human mind through video. My work focuses on areas that fluctuate between society and the individual, including emotions, perspectives on life and death, self-evidence and social norms, and psychopathology.
In recent years, I have been interested in expressions that emerge from intimate relationships with friends. When I film friends as my subjects, the positions of listener or speaker, of a person with lived experience or an expert, begin to blur, and there are moments when a voice or gesture arises simply as that of a friend. Precisely because it is meandering and private, I find a raw sense of humanity there. People can smile while carrying sorrow or cry out of joy. A loud voice may be compelled toward simplification, while a quiet voice can sustain complex nuances.
My work does not aim to explain things in detail, to subsume them into narratives of recovery, or to frame them as abnormal. Without seeking conclusions, I invite imagination and questioning. In exploring the human mind, what I seek from artistic expression is the power to unsettle the many boundaries that define our humanity.
